We in Captain Coconut have decided after almost five years together (with a few personnel changes along the way), it’s time to take a break and pursue some other projects. It’s been an incredible run, and we are grateful to everyone who ever came out to a show, bought our music, or told a friend about us. Your support has kept us going, and we hope you continue to follow us on our future musical endeavors.
Dan Knobler, Matt Porter, and Zack Rosen are currently playing with Flearoy, a 5-piece folk/funk outfit with singer Jon Seale and drummer Jason Burger. They are releasing their self-titled, self-produced debut in November ‘09 and have been playing around NYC and Wesleyan University. Flearoy is a group of friends who love music, and love making music together. They play what they want to hear. They hope you like to hear it too.

So maybe you’re getting ready to have a fun weekend… If not, you should; it’s one of the early weekends of summer when the feeling is still fresh. And you know what? Nothing says summer to me like one of those sort of lame, but always good-feeling street fairs. They may block off your road, and they may have that monotone sham-wow guy, but this year the 3rd Avenue Street Fair will also have Captain Coconut. And you know what else? You may have heard of her, you may have seen her, you may know a thing or two about her, but maybe you haven’t seen her at a street fair, Emily Elbert will be joining us LIVE on 3rd Avenue! Come on, get yourself a kabob and a key chain and watch us get funkified on Sunday at 1:15 pm at 3rd avenue between 73rd and 74th streets.
Be there or be square.
So maybe you’ll see us at the street fair on Sunday and you still won’t get enough. Well, join us on Thursday (6/11) at the Knitting Factory. You really ought to go to this one, they’re gonna close down at the end of the month and move to Brooklyn plus it won’t smell like the street fair and it’s a fond farewell to a place where we made some memories: you guys remember that time we sold out the downstairs room? that was awesome. I think we’ve got some good points here.
You may be thinking, this doesn’t sound like the normal newsletter, well that’s because I let my girlfriend write this one. So see you there, it’s not spring break, it’s not the Christmas holidays (including Hanukkah), it’s summer!

It’s finally here, the brand new CoconutFunk.net! We’ve got news, upcoming gigs, band and individual bios, photos, videos, press, and three tunes from the new record, “Everybody’s Business,” “Stone Don’t Beat,” and “Ampersand (live),” in the audio player at the bottom of the window. We’re so excited about the new site, we’re offering up a free download of “Ampersand,” the live bonus track off Everybody’s Business, in the Media section. Thanks so much to Thomas Bishop for designing the site. We hope you all enjoy and come back often for up-to-date info on the band and more music.
Captain Coconut’s brand new record, Everybody’s Business, is now available on iTunes! Produced and recorded by Dan Knobler, mixed by Alan Evans (of Soulive) and mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering, the album offers a well-conceived collection of contemporary groove music with deep roots in classic funk and soul.
Download Everybody’s Business now on iTunes, or order the physical CD from CDbaby.
Captain Coconut emerged victorious at SCAN’s NYU Battle of the Bands 2009
On Saturday, April 18th, the band raced back to the city from our 3rd annual Zonker Harris Day gig at Wesleyan to take on The Middle Eight, Laura Lee Bishop, Paper or Plastic, and Casual Sweater Tuesdays in battle at Crash Mansion. We were all warmed up and after throwing down fiery versions of “Everybody’s Business” and “Black Sara,” we were declared victors and awarded a cash prize by a panel of judges. Thank you to SCAN and all who attended.
